A Blast from My Genetic Past

Two weeks ago, I got a call from a very nice but hitherto unknown woman in California who was recently gifted with a subscription to Ancestry.com. Consequently, she bought a kit, swabbed her cheek, and sent in her sample. When the results came back, she made a surprising discovery that she felt the need to share with me directly. So, she looked me up online and found out how to contact me. As it turns out, we’re first cousins.

We’ve communicated quite a few times already by phone and email. She even shared with me some pictures of my biological mother, something I had never seen before, along with a picture of my half-brother, who I didn’t know existed. I also made contact with another party involved in the situation surrounding my birth, and it filled in some details surrounding the scant story that came with me back when I was adopted at 13 months old.

Needless to say, my head is still spinning. My heart, though, is truly okay. When one’s identity is in Christ, all is well. More to come, I’m sure, but for now, I’ll just be treasuring these things and pondering them in my heart.

P.S. The woman who called me is the daughter of my biological mother’s brother. That’s what makes us first cousins.
